Are Steel Carports Worth Investing In: Pros & Cons

Steel carports have become an increasingly popular choice for vehicle and equipment storage over the past few decades. They offer unique advantages compared to traditional garages and other storage buildings, making them worth considering for many property owners. However, steel carports also come with some potential drawbacks to weigh when deciding if a steel carport is the right fit for your needs

What is a Steel Carport?

A steel carport is a freestanding or attached open-sided structure designed to provide covered parking and storage space. The roof and vertical support posts of steel carports are constructed from steel beams, while the sides are left open for easy drive-through access.

Unlike an enclosed garage, American steel carports do not have complete walls and are therefore not considered conditioned spaces.

Pros of Steel Carports

If used appropriately for local conditions and needs, steel carports provide some great benefits:

  1. Cost-Savings

The primary advantage of all steel carports is they are significantly less expensive to construct than traditional enclosed garages of the same size. Not having complete foundation walls yields big savings on labor and materials. This makes them ideal for cost-conscious budgets.

  1. Convenient Access

Carports allow for easy drive-through entry from either side since vehicles and equipment can pull all the way through. Their open-sided design makes for hassle-free access.

  1. Flexible Layouts

Steel carports can be customized to fit virtually any layout needed - single or double bays, L-shapes, U-shapes, or combinations to match available space. Their modular steel construction makes adding length, width, or additional covered spots simple.

  1. Quick Installation

Prefabricated carports go up rapidly compared to site-built structures. Their lightweight framed sections are easily bolted into place on prepared footings within days. This means vehicles and valuables are protected from the elements faster.

  1. Durability and Low Maintenance

Structural hot-dipped galvanized steel and durable paint finishes withstand exposure well over time. Rain, snow, and debris pass through with ease than in wood buildings. Little ongoing upkeep is needed beyond occasional pressure washing.

  1. Shelter from Sun, Rain, Snow, and More

Covering vehicles, RVs, boats, equipment, and inventory protects them from damage caused by exposure to harsh weather. Steel roofs shield against sun fading, storm debris, sap dripping from trees, and more.

Cons of Steel Carports

Despite their many benefits, steel carports also come with some drawbacks to consider:

  1. Not as Secure as Garages

The open sides of carports allow easy access inside, so valuable items left unattended may not be as secure. Those needing lockable, climate-controlled storage might prefer enclosed garages.

  1. Risk of Storm Damage

The steel construction is quite durable, however, extreme wind, heavy snow, or hail can sometimes cause structural damage. Those in regions prone to severe weather might prefer more fortified buildings.

  1. Exposed to Elements

Dust, leaves, bird droppings, and other outdoor mess often collect inside open carports. Vehicles remain exposed to rain, sun, humidity, and temperature swings. Enclosed garages protect better in some climates.

  1. Upfront Site Work

Steel carports require a prepared concrete or compacted gravel base and proper drainage for stability. Not having an existing slab or pad means extra upfront site preparation.

  1. Appearance Not for Everyone

Some homeowners associations prohibit open-sided carports or limit them only to certain areas because they look less attractive. Their industrial appearance does not always complement the residential architecture.

  1. Permits and Complex Installs

Getting the necessary building permits for carports is not always straightforward, potentially adding time and cost. Also, installing them on sloped sites or tying into existing structures requires extra work compared to freestanding garages.

Key Considerations When Shopping Steel Carports

Those who decide an open-sided steel carport meets their needs should keep the following guidance in mind:

  • Review warranty coverage closely - longer terms signal better quality and durability.

  • Select thick, heavy-gauge steel framing with adequate wind and snow load capacity.

  • Look for pre-galvanized steel that resists corrosion from exposure.

  • Favor carports with certified, engineered building plans for code approvals.

  • Check that UV-resistant powder coat paint provides long-lasting protection.

  • Ensure hardware like bolts and fasteners are corrosion-resisatant as well.

  • Pick reputable manufacturers like Metal Carport Depot LLC with proven designs.

Are Steel Carports a Worthwhile Investment?

When used for the right applications, steel carports can be a worthwhile investment by providing valuable covered space at significant cost savings compared to traditional buildings. Steel carports have customizable layouts and rapid installation to protect vehicles, equipment, and inventory from harsh weather in various climates.

However, potential downsides like storm vulnerability, security concerns, and aesthetic issues may make enclosed garages, canopies, or other storage better options for some homeowners. Carefully weighing intended use, local conditions, and long-term goals makes choosing the ideal structure for covered parking and storage needs much easier. the search for steel carports near me is crucial for those prioritizing both longevity and convenience. Those still unsure if a steel carport meets their needs can consult with qualified professionals to explore all available options.

Also Available To Land & Home Owners: Rent To Own This Regular Roof Metal Carport With No Credit Check!

Rent To Own Is Available In Most States We Service With Some Manufacturers. Call 1-800-324-5315 For Full Details & Availability.

Many cities & counties require building certification. We can install this Metal Carport (Regular Style Roof) With 29 Gauge Horizontal Roof on your level ground or existing concrete slab. Certified up to 140 MPH/30 PSF with the Standard 14 Gauge Steel Frame. We offer up to 170 MPH Wind Speed or up to 65 PSF Snow Load Certification in most states we service for an additional charge.
All Stated Dimensions Are Wide By Long.

The roof panels used are 29 Gauge Rolled, Rib-Formed, Locked Seam steel panels. Eagle uses Becker's Paint with a Beckrypol Coating System that has a bright and colorful finish, and is available in 14 color choices. Beckrypol is a complete coating system, consisting of a corrosion resistant primer with a durable exterior topcoat that has a functional backer. This coating system provides optimum balance between visual properties and long term performance.

On the Regular Style and the Boxed Eave Style the standard way the roof panels are installed is horizontally. When the roof panels are installed horizontally, the ridges of the steel panels run parallel to the sides and top ridge of the structure. Water, snow, etc., will drain to the front and back of the structure, and may tend to pond on the roof. The maximum length of a horizontal panel is 31'. Any structure over 31' in length will have two horizontal panels seamed together at some place. On the Boxed Eave Style the roof panels can be installed vertically for an additional charge. On the Box Eave Style with the roof panels installed vertically, the ridges of the roof panels run from the top ridge of the structure to the sides, and has "Purlins", (an additional frame running lengthwise), to attach the vertical roof panels to. This roof configuration displaces water, snow, etc., much more efficiently and water will not pond on the roof. We strongly recommends the vertical roof on all structures over 31'. Vertical Roof Structures could be up to one foot shorter than specified length.

The standard frame used is 14 Gauge 2 1/2 Inch Galvanized Steel Tubing certified for 30 PSF snow load and 140 MPH wind gust if properly anchored as described below. The standard spacing of the frame legs/bows is 5 feet on center. There may be a small charge for engineering plans in some states if needed.

There are three anchoring types used for installation. The standard concrete anchor used is a traditional concrete wedge type anchor. If anchored to a proper footing this way, the building will be certified. An optional helical mobile home anchor or asphalt anchor is used and required for ground installation to achieve certification on a dirt, asphalt, or a gravel surface. A 30 inch rebar anchor is used when a structure is mounted directly to a dirt, asphalt, or a gravel surface, and not needing certification.

Please insure that the site designated for installation is as flat and square a surface as possible. We do not build over any structure without damage waivers signed and extra labor fees charged. Make sure site is clear of any obstructions. In order to provide you with affordable products with free installation, site preparation as well as building permits, are the responsibility of the customer and must be done before installation is attempted. If the site is not level and square then the structure will have to be installed "As Is". We can not anchor to solid rock. The anchors must be able to go into the ground if not anchored on concrete. Call 1st if you have any concerns.

This is a special order. Please only order if you have done all due diligence and due process.

No refunds of the down payment can be given on cancellations for any reason. The down payment is the restocking fee and is not refundable for any reason. The customer is responsible for any local permits, covenant searches, rights of way, set-back restrictions, site preparation, city or county ordinances etc. Delivery and installation should be within 2 to 8 weeks from time of order in almost all cases. This is why only a small portion of the sales price, (10% - $595.00 to $1,999.00, 12% - $2.000.00 to $3,999.00, 15% - $4.000.00 to $4,999.00, and 16% - $5,000.00 and up), is required to order. The balance, (84% to 90% of the sales price, plus the sales tax), is only paid when the work has been completed and your product has been installed.

Some manufactures may charge a small convenience fee if balance is paid by credit or debit card.

To include installation at these prices we can only install the product the week we are installing products in your area, which could be on a two to four week rotation, depending the work level in the exact area of the installation. We will try to get your product installed as soon as possible. Installation delays may occur and will not justify a refund. No Exceptions.
